From the time most females are small they daydream of their wedding day. Much of their daydream time is spent focusing on their bridal gown; of how they will look like a princess or an angel as they float down the aisle towards their handsome prince. Fortunately for the wedding gown dreamers of today, we have Vera Wang. Vera Wang is one of the most sought after wedding gown designers of our time. Every bride dreams of wearing Vera Wang on her special day.
You can always spot a Vera Wang wedding gown. Her designs are extremely feminine with a sense of mystery, romance and sensuality. Fall 2009 Wedding Gown Collection exemplifies Vera Wang’s philosophy that wedding gowns are supposed to present an image of charm, innocence and theatricality with a touch of seduction.
Fall 2009 dresses are a mix off form fitting Grecian waists, drop waist and “almost empire” waists. Some gowns offer ball gown type wide skirts and some present layer after layer of cloudlike froth for a skirt that literally appears to move on air. With a free falling, form fitting skirt the bride glides gracefully down the aisle.
Vera Wang wedding gowns are the ultimate in whimsy and romance; they are truly the dresses that little girl’s dreams are made of. She touches many of her gowns with just a hint of color, embellishes them with Swarovski crystals to sparkle like the stars and sashes of the faintest pastels to add flair to the gowns. Layers of petticoats keep skirts floating in place for a bridal walk down the aisle to always be remembered.
For the little girl who dreamed of one day looking like a princess on her wedding day, Vera Wang offers the “Fairy Princess”. This gown is stunning with organza petal embroidery, bias trimmed flouncy skirt, strapless with a drop style waist. This dress will make any woman look like a princess.
For the little princess in all of you, browse Vera Wang for the most beautiful wedding gown for your special day.
Although she’s more well known for her wedding dresses (which have been featured in shows like Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, natch), Vera Wang can design some majorly chic casuals. Her spring collection covers a very wide range of styles to the point of looking disjointed, yet the restrained palette keeps everything together.
For lack of better categories, Wang’s spring collection can be clumped into two groups based on look – draping or hugging. While most of the pieces belonged to the former, with most of the looks shimmying and swaying down the runway, there were still some ensembles that would look good only up to size 2.
Her first look down the runway – an orange and dark apricot detail collar dress layered with black organza and a pepper-colored bolero – was a fitting representative for all the rest. Layers and little tricks with colors were Wang’s primary tools this season, yet she maximized her designs even with such limitations.
One of her two gown looks, for example – a sequined gold gazar mini-dress under shimmering organza – displays the kind of floating, ethereal quality that Wang infused into this season’s wardrobe. Yes, the organza barely counts for any cover at all, but it does transform a simple piece into a seemingly otherworldly outfit.
Her organza-loving aesthetic also had a lot of mileage in the daywear portion. Skirts and entire dresses were layered underneath different colors of the stuff, adding volume to the pieces without adding too much weight visually and literally. You’ve got to admit, it’s a pretty nifty trick for Wang that’s particularly apt for the warmer weather of spring.
Keeping everything on the figurative ground were the colors (or lack thereof) and the accessories that Wang chose for the show. For the latter, she used clumps of irregular beads formed into crystalline belts or necklaces. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the shows, you’d almost think that she got them straight from the Burberry show.
Tiny jolts of color here and there kept Wang’s collection lively and spring-appropriate. A bright orange bead necklace here or a peek of mustard yellow gazar slip there seemed enough color for Wang this season. For all the rest, she either kept to a sensible color block scheme or a monochromatic Pucci-esque print that brought a little energy in.

Designer Vera Wang has been known to turn to a very wide variety of inspirations for her work. For Fall 2008, she seems to have gone to both ends of the spectrum, giving her collection two very distinct looks. One is a very street-friendly vibe, full of outfits that you could actually wear for gallivanting all across Manhattan. The other is a very drape-y look that feels like it comes straight from the 1950’s and a Diane Von Furstenberg collection.
The very wearable, street-wearable portion of the collection was composed mainly of loose, dramatic tops with a lot of movement worn over tight, tight leggings and heels. Of particular interest was the outfit that opened the show – a gray scoop-neck top with a lot of fringe cascading in front, worn under a cropped fur-collar jacket. You could easily pick out which pieces were meant to be part of that streetwear feel because they looked very sculptural, just like the photo on the left.

And then there was the dressier part of the collection that featured a lot of loose fitting skirts and draping, collarless tops and outerwear. Perhaps the accessories – a drooping bucket hat there and stockings everywhere – helped add to the illusion of the era. The designer kept from looking too vintage by manipulating fabrics to give the pieces new details. Huge florets in organza, dream-like skirts in tulle and cascading ruffle details added a touch of novelty and trend.
Few of the outfits in the collection will probably make it as the next celebrity fashion item, as it takes a certain kind of person and occasion to wear most of the designer’s items. But even if Vera Wang didn’t exactly make the must-have collection of the season, she nonetheless succeeded in making a lot of things that were very, very attractive (and wearable to boot).
