In most cases, a new fashion trend would mean that you’d have to show an extra inch or two of skin. The Mulleavy sisters apparently don’t believe the same thing, as you’d see in their designs for the Fall 2008 Rodarte collection. They already experimented with color for Spring and, instead of focusing on lowering necklines or shortening skirts, they simply played around with the details on their garments.
Knit was the name of the game for a large part of the collection. Contrary to the usual style, however, the knitwear was left looking unfinished and unpolished overall. The knit pieces could easily have looked frumpy with their simple striped or color-blocked patterns, but the raw look gives it additional depth and dimension. Paired with plainer and sleeker pieces, it’s an aesthetic very reminiscent of vintage chic.
As the collection proceeds from daywear to eveningwear, the designs also change from knits to softer pieces that have a lot of movement. Soft and sheer fabrics like thin organza and tulle made for dreamlike and very feminine skirts. When ripped to shreds and then reassembled as a skirt, the same fabrics make a great play on the current fashion trend with fringe where latest Fendi handbags adds another charm.
Eveningwear was a very short affair that consisted of only three gowns. However, each one was quite memorable because they looked like a more elegant version of the typical Chloe print – a simple, neutral color with a strong, contrasting color or two splashed liberally across it. Combine that with a sheer and flowing fabric and you have a diaphanous dream of a design walking down the runway.
