It might not be so explicit, but these slightly shimmering pants from Dolce & Gabbana seem to be harking back to the time when bell-bottoms and flared jeans were cool. Of course, denim isn’t as acceptable on today’s very luxe-conscious runways, but the sentiment is there nonetheless. The belted top, meanwhile, provides a pleasant contrast to the utter looseness and casualness of the pants.

You could take the trend by elements if you want to leave your Woodstock days behind but look forward to a very fashionable spring. This outfit from Matthew Williamson captures the vibrant colors of retro in a deeper, slightly more modern sheen. While the outfit as is looks a little too punk rock (it’s probably the Avril Lavigne hairstyle), that’s nothing a couple of bangles and those thin headbands from before won’t solve.

This trend might just call for a little experimentation, especially since you’ve got so much to play around with. Using those big colors from the period with classic pieces like the white tank in the Matthew Williamson ensemble apparently work. So does wearing a slightly fitted top with loose, flowing bottoms, like with D&G. You’d better start mixing and matching, girl; spring isn’t going to be around forever.

You might be worried that canvas might be just a little too slouchy for the office or any other place that’s more formal than just casual. Fortunately, there’s a wide range of canvas materials out there. Just keep in mind that the more structured and rigid the canvas in an item is, the more formal it’ll look. Just sift through your options and look for a certain structure to the bag; you’re sure to find at least one.

This trend isn’t limited to just bags. If you happen to click with canvas, feel free to grab canvas shoes, belts and even wallets. Now is the time to bring out the inner utilitarian because it’s not everyday that utility gets to intersect with stylishness. Bags for men aren’t a new idea by far, although they did cause quite a stir last year when a name was found for guy-carried bags (‘murse,’ short for ‘man purse’). This season, however, you might be seeing a luggage trend from a completely different source. Louis Vuitton has been selling a backpack design for some time now, and it’s a very utilitarian thing that’s just disguised as a fashionable high-end leather bag. But if you like your bags rough and rugged, this trend might actually work out for you.

Prada, for example, has just released a nylon backpack that hearkens back to wartime-era bags. It’s roomy enough for a weekend’s worth of clothes, durable enough to literally drag around (though why you’d do that to a $1,100 bag is bewildering) and made from a material that you can get wet.

Gucci is another big name that’s gotten on the backpack bandwagon, this time in canvas. The black number with the signature Gucci stripe is an eye-catching thing indeed, though you’d better not get caught wearing one by any eye if you’re a day over 30.

Bringing Your Backpack

They’re obviously a lot less formal than briefcases, and even your slouchiest messenger bag looks more mature than a backpack. Unless you really want your backpack to be noticed, keep the pack as quiet or as understated as possible. The plain, solid colored Prada backpack had the right idea. Just stay away from those wild-printed Jansport types and you should be fine.

Keep your backpacks strictly for casual or weekend use, and never for any outfit that you’ll be wearing to the office. Backpacks and work environments simply don’t mix (unless you’re 12 years old), no matter how expensive or formal-looking your backpack. No matter how trendy backpacks might be, don’t chuck your briefcases away yet. Keep them instead for that time when the vogue inevitably swings back to messengers.

The weather should be warming up soon in many parts of the world, and it’s only fitting to dress for the balmier temperatures. Luxury fashion houses Fendi and Yves Saint Laurent are leading the pack with guys’ looks that look both casual and literally cool.

Stefano Pilati at YSL probably didn’t intend to make clothes that were softer or more comfortable than the usual, but that’s exactly how his creations turned out. Lighter fabrics combined with more vivid colors created a more youthful and laid back vibe. The soft, cropped pants and shoes-sans-socks look helped, too. This collarless, open-top, light brown number paired with the gray pants looks slouchy enough to lounge in, yet stylish enough to wear to dinner at the parents’.

All this casualness has got sticklers to formality all in a dither, but it spells good news for you, especially once the sun begins peeking out again. Gone (for now) are the days when stylish means structured to the point of stiff. The tailored look might have been popular on the runways a couple of season’s back, but expect guys to begin taking a more relaxed stand with their style. What’s current and new at trendy in fashion houses like Fendi and YSL should be making their way to the general public in a couple of months.

Stock up on more neutral colored pieces in soft cotton or silk blends, with the odd red or blue top thrown in. If you always wear what you feel is most comfortable, now’s your chance to look fashion-updated while you’re at it.
